Bible Text: Romans 10:6-13; John 16:7-15 |

Outline:  This sermon is the first in a new series of talks based on the Apostle’s Creed. It lays the foundations for the remaining sermons (which will focus on specific topics from the Creed), by asking three introductory questions;

  1. What is the Apostle’s Creed? Here we look at the development of the Creed as a faithful summary of biblical teaching on the essential of the Christian faith.
  2. What is the purpose of the Creed? We see how the Creed is useful for instruction especially for the new believer; it serves as measure of true doctrine against false teaching; it gives us a sense of history and perspective as it reminds us that we recite the Creed in a community of the faithful which stretches all the way back to Jesus and the disciples
  3. What do we mean when we say “We Believe” (the meaning of faith and belief). With this last question, we consider the meaning of faith in terms of understanding, trust, commitment and obedience.

Finally we consider the importance of letting faith make the sometimes long journey from head to “heart”!
