In chapter 42 of Isaiah we meet for the first time, the mysterious figure of “The Servant of the Lord.”
Although the nation of Israel as a whole is referred to as God’s Servant in the previous chapter 41, we now encounter the Servant as an individual, a personification of the one true faithful Israelite who follows the Lord with a pure heart and perfect obedience.
With the help of the New Testament Gospels, we see how Isaiah’s Servant is perfectly fulfilled in the coming of the Messiah, Jesus - whose baptism described in Luke 3, draws heavily on the Isaiah 42 passage…….. “this is my beloved Son in whom I delight!”.
The remainder of the sermon looks at the Servant under three headings and considers how Jesus uniquely fulfils each role.
- The Servant’s Calling (v1)
- The Servant’s Mission
