There are numerous jokes about marriage, many of which betray a slightly cynical view of marriage in our modern society. Sadly about 50% of marriages now end in divorce, and we all know people who have been hurt through such breakdown in relationships. The introduction to the marriage service says that marriage is 'a gift of God' and lays down how God blesses and enriches couples and society through marriage. There are two keys to a healthy marriage, at all stages of life. Time - do we prioritise our time for those that we love, or are we too busy? Love - do we follow that model of sacrificial, unconditional love that Christ gives us, spoken about in 1 Cor 13? These are the firm foundations that our marriages should be built on, otherwise they will fall when the storm of life come. The good news is that when we do fail, which we all do, then we can return again, together, to Christ who is perfectly loving and we can say that "Jesus never fails .....".
