Maundy Thursday Communion 2017: Leadership … but not as we know it

13th April, 2017 ()

Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; John 13:1-17, 31b-35 |

Leadership is a 'buzz' word in many areas of society; sport, politics, business, education, church. What is often portrayed as 'leadership' is confident, strong, visionary, passionate, forward thinking ... Jesus indeed showed many of these skills, but at the climax of his ministry he moved away from the classic, modern, picture of leadership. He did the job of the lowest servant, the one that none of his disciples would do, who had just been arguing about who was most important. He deliberately humbled himself and took on the attire and role of the servant. Here he foreshadows what he will do on the cross - He will wash them clean from their sins, through His blood, and that will be a once and for all washing. He says that each who is washed then becomes 'part of Him', in union with Him. Jesus washes us clean today and then we're asked to follow our leader and ensure we continue that humble, self-sacrificial service. loving and serving those around us. That is true leadership.
