Outline: In this sermon we look at the question the disciples put before Jesus – “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” (Matt 18v1)
We see that Jesus gave the disciples the most counterintuitive answer imaginable! He models true greatness by taking a little child (toddler) and telling his disciples (v4) “whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven”.
In the sermon we look at:
- The role of humility vs pride in our Christian journey, especially the example of the helplessness of a little child pointing the way to total dependence on God our Father
- The example of Jesus in his incarnation and death on a cross as the ultimate act of sacrifice and humble service.
Entry into the Kingdom which requires that “we change (convert in the old AV Bible!) and become like little children” as a reflection of the Gospel of Jesus rather than a rule of religion where we strive to earn God’s forgiveness by various works
