Outline: We complete out Advent 2017 series by looking at the character of Joseph and the part he plays in the Christmas story. Although the Gospels tell us less about Joseph than his wife to be Mary, there is much we can learn from his character and commitment.
We look at two themes in particular;
1. One from Luke’s Gospel; how Joseph, who becomes the legal, adoptive father of Jesus, provides the coming Messiah with a crucial identity – that he will be the prophesied descendant of good King David – for Joseph is indeed a biological descendant of the great King.
2. One from Matthew’s Gospel; here we see Joseph the honest and honourable man confronted by the Angel’s account of Mary’s pregnancy. At the crucial moment of decision, he obeys the Angel and accepts Mary and the unborn child growing inside her. Afterwards, Joseph is told two great things about the baby to be; he will be Emmanuel (God with us) and he will be physically named Jesus (because he will save his people from their sin)
